Day 3 and 4 of the flats and handwashing challenge

Yesterday and today also went smoothly.

Yesterday-Day 3
I had to hang the diapers indoors as it was raining cats and dogs and threatening to get worse. I hung the diapers upstairs on a wooden drying rack. I used up all the covers EXCEPT for the one on the 1 yr old. I had been trying to get by with just 5 covers between the 2 kids. I decided yesterday that that was not realistic. I added one more cover to the mix. So far I have 2 flip covers, 3 blueberry coveralls (both brands are one sized) and now I have added 1 bummis super whisper wrap in size medium (I converted this one to snaps a while back as the velcro was shot.) The diapers were washed mid afternoon. By supper they were still drenched. I ended up leaving them overnight and in the morning the diapers and covers were dry but the wipes were all still damp.

Today-Day 4
We had sun today! We also had a number of poopy diapers. I was in a hurry while changing diapers so I didnt get these ones rinsed off right away. Woops. After lunch I went in and started cleaning them off. I rinsed all the solids away and then set them to soak in the tub. I let them sit for a while in the soapy water. Going back in to the bathroom I got up against the towel and started in on scrubbing. I found that by not rinsing the diapers right away I did end up with some staining. I scrubbed and scrubbed (bare handed. I HATE those rubber gloves. I figure that hands are washable too.) and set the water to drain. I then started rinsing the diapers, covers and wipes out. This process actually takes less time to do then it sounds. I had 4 flats, 4 covers, and 7 wipes. I am guessing that it took me right around 20 minutes to wash them all. After rinsing I do the smell test on them and then take them out to dry.
We do have some stains today since I didn't rinse the poopy diapers right away, but I am waiting to see how well the sun does its job.

I am actually a bit surprised how little time it takes to wash the diapers. I was worried that it would take a LONG time and that I would hate it. My hands are still just fine-no chapping or drying out. The most trouble I had was with trying to make it with 5 covers for 2 boys. Adding 1 more cover yesterday has helped quite a bit. Of course, letting the 1 yr old crawl around bare for a while to let his bum air out reduced 1 diaper from the wash pile. He decided that it would be a good idea to wee on my kitchen floor while practicing pulling himself up to the bench. Oh well. I should have known better. LOL
