Changing Diapers- A review

I was recently contacted and asked to do a review on my blog of the new book by Kelly Wels Changing Diapers: the Hip Mom's Guide to Modern Cloth Diapering.

I was excited to get the chance to take a sneak peak! Within a couple days I had the advanced reader copy in hand! I eagerly dug in and was enjoying reading all about the stats as to WHY people are choosing Modern cloth diapers. Reasons such as health, finances, potential eco-benifits and even (gasp) for the FUN of it all! I enjoyed reading what real moms had to say here and there throughout the book.

I LOVED the chapter about the basics of cloth diapering. Kelly covered a lot of the lingo that is used in the cloth diaper subculture. That will be SUPER helpful to mamas who are new to the cloth diapering world. She also covered issues like velcro vs. snaps, which can be a hard decision for many moms to make.

Are you interested in diapering a newborn or maybe not sure about how many diapers you need? How about cloth diapering while your kiddo is at daycare or even if it is possible to diaper multiples in cloth? There are chapters that cover these frequently asked questions too!

There is SO much more available in this book. Chapters on troubleshooting, laundry day and supplies... I was impressed by the amount of material covered in this book. When I first started getting into cloth diapering I wished that such a book was out there as a resource. NOW IT IS! This would be a great book to give to new moms and your friends who are interested in knowing more about cloth. Kelly breaks it all down in an easy to read format.

And OH! The pictures! In my advanced reader copy all the pictures are black and white. Even though I enjoyed the pictures, I got confirmation that the actual book will have full color photographs. I can't wait to see how much more beautiful they will be in color! Cute babies, fluffy bums...

Changing Diapers will be available October 1st of this year from Amazon, Kelly's Closet and KellyWels.com

The price will be $17.95 but if you purchase the book HERE with the promo code TALK you will be able to get 50% off. How terrific is that! Promo code TALK is valid until October 13th.

As a celebration for the release of the Changing Diapers book Kelly is sponsoring a giveaway for a Fuzzi-Bunz one size diaper and a "I'm a hip mom and love cloth diapers" eco-friendly tattoo. Please leave a comment telling me why you got started cloth diapering and I will randomly choose a winner on Sep 21st. Make sure you leave your email address in the comment so that I will have a way to contact the winner with details on how to collect the prize.

EDIT Sep 21st with winner. Michelle, My 3 yr old son chose your number. I'll be contacting you shortly. Congratulations!

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did! Spread the news, grab your copy and...Happy Reading!

Day 7 flats and handwashing challenge

Sunday (day 7)

I hung the diapers on the line last night after washing. I was counting on there being a nice wind to dry them out. Instead, we ended up with an extra rinse cycle. They were DRENCHED that morning. I used the very last cover for while we were at church and left the rest of them hanging in the house over the register. I was hoping that they would dry by the time we got home. I had plenty of diapers left but no dry covers. Getting home I found that the binding on the covers was all that was wet still. I chose the driest one and continued on.

This last week has been an interesting experience to say the least. I am glad that I joined in! I think that if I had to do this full time I would probably get one of those washer plunger things.

I will be going back to using my washer and drier. Even though it didn't really take that long to wash by hand I have plenty of other things that take up my time with having all three of my kiddos under 3 yrs old and another on the way. I am confident that if I ever did not have access to a washer and drier that I would continue to cloth diaper though.

I really liked the flat diapers. So much so that I am considering making up a handful of small flats for this new baby on the way. The snappis are a WONDERFUL tool. I found them a while back and used them with prefolds. My husband MUCH prefers the snappis to the standard diaper pins. The flats that Diaper Junction provided me with were really nice. They washed up easy and were substantial. The absorbed well and dried quickly. (when they wern't being rained on)

Day 5 and 6 of the flats and handwashing challenge

Friday (day 5) Went like normal. I got super busy though and didn't wash the diapers. I let them hang out in the diaper pail for a while. You know. To get better aquainted with their stinky friends.

As a result I did end up with some more subborn stains. Oh well. Stains don't bother me all that much in diapers.

Saturday (day 6) was also a normal day. Well, as normal as it can get with someone moving into the house and a graduation party to go to. I didn't manage to get to washing the diapers till this evening. I was OUT of covers. Hopefully these dry quickly tonight and we don't get rain. That would be bad as every single cover (for the challenge anyways) is on the line EXCEPT the one cover for my 2 yr old. WHEW! We cut this one way to close!

I threw the diapers into the tub to soak while we were at the graduation party. After we got back home I went right in and got them scrubbed up and clean. They are dancing away on the line now.

I am still LOVING flats. I normally use the origami fold with my 1 yr old and a pad fold for naptime for my 2 yr old. Yesterday he used the same diaper twice though as he was still dry. (WAIT! THAT COVER IS STILL USEABLE! It is waiting in the office for his next naptime! He went to nap in unders today and woke up dry! WOOHOO! I forgot about that cover and diaper!) Yes, I can be random sometimes. At least this time it was on topic. ;) I have tried the "diaperbag fold" once. I don't know if I am doing it right but whatever I did seemed to work well.

Day 3 and 4 of the flats and handwashing challenge

Yesterday and today also went smoothly.

Yesterday-Day 3
I had to hang the diapers indoors as it was raining cats and dogs and threatening to get worse. I hung the diapers upstairs on a wooden drying rack. I used up all the covers EXCEPT for the one on the 1 yr old. I had been trying to get by with just 5 covers between the 2 kids. I decided yesterday that that was not realistic. I added one more cover to the mix. So far I have 2 flip covers, 3 blueberry coveralls (both brands are one sized) and now I have added 1 bummis super whisper wrap in size medium (I converted this one to snaps a while back as the velcro was shot.) The diapers were washed mid afternoon. By supper they were still drenched. I ended up leaving them overnight and in the morning the diapers and covers were dry but the wipes were all still damp.

Today-Day 4
We had sun today! We also had a number of poopy diapers. I was in a hurry while changing diapers so I didnt get these ones rinsed off right away. Woops. After lunch I went in and started cleaning them off. I rinsed all the solids away and then set them to soak in the tub. I let them sit for a while in the soapy water. Going back in to the bathroom I got up against the towel and started in on scrubbing. I found that by not rinsing the diapers right away I did end up with some staining. I scrubbed and scrubbed (bare handed. I HATE those rubber gloves. I figure that hands are washable too.) and set the water to drain. I then started rinsing the diapers, covers and wipes out. This process actually takes less time to do then it sounds. I had 4 flats, 4 covers, and 7 wipes. I am guessing that it took me right around 20 minutes to wash them all. After rinsing I do the smell test on them and then take them out to dry.
We do have some stains today since I didn't rinse the poopy diapers right away, but I am waiting to see how well the sun does its job.

I am actually a bit surprised how little time it takes to wash the diapers. I was worried that it would take a LONG time and that I would hate it. My hands are still just fine-no chapping or drying out. The most trouble I had was with trying to make it with 5 covers for 2 boys. Adding 1 more cover yesterday has helped quite a bit. Of course, letting the 1 yr old crawl around bare for a while to let his bum air out reduced 1 diaper from the wash pile. He decided that it would be a good idea to wee on my kitchen floor while practicing pulling himself up to the bench. Oh well. I should have known better. LOL

Day 1 and 2 of the flats and handwashing challenge

Yesterday was the first day of the challenge. It was pretty normal. I used both the origami fold and the pad fold. I set a couple diapers up with the pad fold already set into the cover in case my Husband decided to change a diaper.

My youngest (1 yr old) is in diapers full time. Nothing uneventful for him. Diaper change as normal. I was planning to also try flats at night starting last night but my little guy has been flirting with the idea of getting a rash lately and I didn't want to risk it. He went into a disposable diaper for bedtime. (side note-we still havn't found a good night time solution with cloth diapers. Even disposable diapers don't work that well but at least we don't end up with a fire red bum and sad child in the morning) My 1 yr old is starting to hold hiself for longer periods of time and then SATURATE his diapers. So far this week 1 flat diaper from Diaper Junction or 2 flat Gerber diapers is taking care of it though.

My middle boy (2 yrs old) is in diapers only at naps and night time now. (Can we all do a happy dance?) He self potty trained right around his second birthday. I think it was because he saw his older brother (3 yrs old) going potty all the time and he decided to copy yet another thing that brother does. (big brother also self potty trained around 2 yrs old) He still occasionally will have an accident during the day but he is pretty reliable. We have been taking him places and not putting him into a diaper now for about a month.

WASHING- Today (the second day) I washed the diapers. We didnt go through very many diapers. Remember, my 1 yr old is holding it for a long time and then super soaking. We needed to change his diapers 3 times yesterday. I washed this morning after I got the boys cleaned up from breakfast. I unfolded all diapers and threw them into the tub. 4 flats, 3 covers and a couple wipes. I let them sit in the hot water for a little while while I did other things and then I came back and swished them around for a while. We only had 1 poopy diaper, that I rinsed very well promptly so no nasty stuff in the wash water, so it I didnt have to do a ton of scrubbing. I threw some liquid soap that was sitting by the tub into the wash water and scrubbed a little bit and then removed things one at a time and rinsed well and then set them aside to hang. They are on the line right now and look to be dry!

First day and a half gone and it wasnt so bad! Washing didn't really even take that long!

Getting ready!

The flats and handwashing challenge starts in less then a week! I think I am pretty much set!

My plan for the week is as follows.

I have 1 dz flat diapers from Diaper Junction sitting here waiting for the big day. I plan to use a mixture of Bummis Super Whisper Wraps and Blueberry on size coveralls for covers. If I end up needing them I also have a dozen Gerber flats but they are SO inferior to the DJ flats that I am going to do my best to not need them. I also have a handful of snappis.

I plan to attempt to handwash in our tub each diaper as it comes off of the babies bum. If that turns out to be too much I plan to wash once a day. I plan to try a mixture of hanging outdoors and hanging on a wooden drying rack in an upstairs room out of the way.

The only thing I have yet to determine is what I will use to wash the diapers other then plain water. I am assuming that I will just use my Allens Naturally (powder form) by rehydrating it and putting it in a squeeze bottle... but I am not sure yet.

I will be diapering my 1 yr old full time and my 2 yr old at naps! We will TRY flats at night too but I am not holding my breath.. I have super soakers.

Fluffy mail!

I got fluffy mail today! Diaper Junction was very kind to provide a number of cloth diapering moms the opportunity to receive a dozen flat diapers free of charge in order to participate in the Flats and Handwashing challenge!

I unpackaged the diapers and was quite impressed! They were so nice! Straight out of the box they felt very soft and were also quite luxurious! I always assumed that all flats were like the gerber flats... you know, gauzy...not even "real" fabric... THESE flats are beautiful! They are substantial and really look like they will do a good job! I am getting ready to prep them as soon as my other laundry for the day is all done. Look for another post on how I prepped them soon!

Cloth diapering to save money?

Are any of you cringing every time you buy a new box of disposable diapers? Does it seem like the box lasts fewer and fewer days every shopping trip? Been there, done that.

We are currently cloth diapering our 3rd boy. Each baby that comes along we have put into cloth sooner and sooner. Our last baby was in cloth as soon as we got home from the hospital. We choose to cloth diaper for financial reasons. I am a stay at home mom and this is one of the areas that we cut back in in order to be able to do that. Because I like to sew as a hobby I make a lot of our own diapers.

I recently decided that I wanted to try out the most basic of cloth diaper styles-Flat diapers. This style of diaper is just a big single layer square of fabric. I assumed that I would not care for flat diapers but I wanted to at least try them. I figured that if I really hated them I could just fold them up and use them to stuff pocket diapers. I got a cheap 12 pack at K-Mart on a whim and washed them up. I watched a few youtube videos on how to fold them up and dove in. I was actually surprised that I LIKED the flat diapers! They were so very trim! Folding them wasnt that big of a deal and drying time? WOW! They dried very quickly in my drier!

Flat diapers are considered one of the cheepest ways to cloth diaper. If you are really wanting to save money you can even use extra baby blankets and fold them just like you would a flat diaper. Also, many people use flour sack towels as flat diapers!

I am blessed to have my very own washer, drier and clothesline, but what about people who are living in apartments? What about people that cant afford the extra trips to the laundromat that cloth diapering would mean? Are they forced to continue shelling out their hard earned cash for disposable diapers because of lack of laundry facilities?

Kim of Dirty Diaper Laundry is on a mission to prove that it can be done. She has gotten a challenge together for moms to cloth diaper using flats for a whole week WITHOUT using a washing machine and drier. I am looking forward to trying this! I have often wondered how I could continue to cloth diaper if we had no ability to run our washer. Anyone want to join in on the challenge? Here are the rules and information needed! It runs from May 23 through May 30th.

I am going to be cloth diapering our youngest (almost 1 yr old) full time. Our second youngest (2 yrs old) is still in diapers whenever we leave home so he will join in on the fun too. Our oldest (3 yrs old) is still in diapers at night time so even he might get to participate. (now you see why we cloth diaper for financial reasons... 3 boys 3 and under would make for a LOT of disposable diapers to purchase.)

Join in on the experiment! Tell others and lets see how it works!
