Fluffy mail!

I got fluffy mail today! Diaper Junction was very kind to provide a number of cloth diapering moms the opportunity to receive a dozen flat diapers free of charge in order to participate in the Flats and Handwashing challenge!

I unpackaged the diapers and was quite impressed! They were so nice! Straight out of the box they felt very soft and were also quite luxurious! I always assumed that all flats were like the gerber flats... you know, gauzy...not even "real" fabric... THESE flats are beautiful! They are substantial and really look like they will do a good job! I am getting ready to prep them as soon as my other laundry for the day is all done. Look for another post on how I prepped them soon!

Cloth diapering to save money?

Are any of you cringing every time you buy a new box of disposable diapers? Does it seem like the box lasts fewer and fewer days every shopping trip? Been there, done that.

We are currently cloth diapering our 3rd boy. Each baby that comes along we have put into cloth sooner and sooner. Our last baby was in cloth as soon as we got home from the hospital. We choose to cloth diaper for financial reasons. I am a stay at home mom and this is one of the areas that we cut back in in order to be able to do that. Because I like to sew as a hobby I make a lot of our own diapers.

I recently decided that I wanted to try out the most basic of cloth diaper styles-Flat diapers. This style of diaper is just a big single layer square of fabric. I assumed that I would not care for flat diapers but I wanted to at least try them. I figured that if I really hated them I could just fold them up and use them to stuff pocket diapers. I got a cheap 12 pack at K-Mart on a whim and washed them up. I watched a few youtube videos on how to fold them up and dove in. I was actually surprised that I LIKED the flat diapers! They were so very trim! Folding them wasnt that big of a deal and drying time? WOW! They dried very quickly in my drier!

Flat diapers are considered one of the cheepest ways to cloth diaper. If you are really wanting to save money you can even use extra baby blankets and fold them just like you would a flat diaper. Also, many people use flour sack towels as flat diapers!

I am blessed to have my very own washer, drier and clothesline, but what about people who are living in apartments? What about people that cant afford the extra trips to the laundromat that cloth diapering would mean? Are they forced to continue shelling out their hard earned cash for disposable diapers because of lack of laundry facilities?

Kim of Dirty Diaper Laundry is on a mission to prove that it can be done. She has gotten a challenge together for moms to cloth diaper using flats for a whole week WITHOUT using a washing machine and drier. I am looking forward to trying this! I have often wondered how I could continue to cloth diaper if we had no ability to run our washer. Anyone want to join in on the challenge? Here are the rules and information needed! It runs from May 23 through May 30th.

I am going to be cloth diapering our youngest (almost 1 yr old) full time. Our second youngest (2 yrs old) is still in diapers whenever we leave home so he will join in on the fun too. Our oldest (3 yrs old) is still in diapers at night time so even he might get to participate. (now you see why we cloth diaper for financial reasons... 3 boys 3 and under would make for a LOT of disposable diapers to purchase.)

Join in on the experiment! Tell others and lets see how it works!
